Comic Review--Scooby Apoclaypse Issues 1-9 by Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis, Ron Wagner, Dale Eaglesham, Howard Porter

Those meddling kids-Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, and their dog, Scooby-Doo-get more ghost-debunking than they bargained for when faced with a fundamental change in their world. The apocalypse has happened. Old rules about logic no longer apply. The creatures of the night are among us, and the crew of the Magical Mystery Machine has to fight to survive-because in the apocalyptic badlands of the near-future, the horrors are real!

This new monthly series takes Scooby and the gang to a whole new level and features character designs by comics superstar Jim Lee!

Scooby Apocalypse is a whole new Scooby Doo universe! Here the gang is just getting together under new circumstances. And it's not about solving mysteries and catching bad guys in a creepy mask, here, the monsters are real!

The world is going to hell in a handbasket Velma is afraid it's partially her fault. She asks Daphne and Fred for their help in exposing the company she works for and that the virus or whatever you want to call it it, that will take out a human's tendencies towards evil and other bad things is irrevocably erased. But naturally, something went wrong with the program and the virus that is latching onto people is turning them into monsters!

Shaggy worked as a dog caretaker at the facility and Scooby Doo was the first "expierment" to make dogs more intelligent on a human level where they could even talk. But sadly, Scooby is a "failed" experiment for he never seemed to gain that killer instinct.

This first issue was more about setting the scene and circumstances and it ended in a most chilling way. It even includes an extra story of Shaggy's first day on the job!

The apocalypse continues as Scooby and the gang explore a mysterious facility that may hold the key to their survival. Little do they know that a particularly powerful puppy and his gang of mutated mutts are waiting in the shadows-and they’re ready to attack!

The adventure continues in this one as the we learn a bit more abut what's happening to the world. It definitely has an apocalyptic feel to it as the gang is running for their lives and there seem to be no other people about. We learn of the mysterious Four, a group of people who are behind the imaginings of the facility where Velma worked. The gang is struggling to get out the place but the monsters are everywhere it seems. They believe that all these monsters were once human beings too, and we slowly see Daphne go to a dark place in order to survive.

After fleeing a monster-infested underground base, Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy and Scooby stumble upon a desert ghost town where they hope to catch their breath. But when night falls, they learn it’s not a ghost town after all—and the terrors that show up like to bite! Scooby Snack is about to take on a whole new meaning.

The fight to survive continues on with the gang and Scooby as they try to get out of the facility alive. And when the finally get a step forward, one of their own is injured.

I especially enjoyed this issue for there was a moment on the rooftop where we could see a few iconic things from the Scooby Doo universe at large!

The gang is still on the run, it seems there is no longer anywhere safe for them to hide out. There will always be the danger of monsters lurking around somewhere. Add to that there's another group that's following Scooby and the gang...led by a very familiar face! Dun dun DUN!!!!

The world is a monster madhouse, and Scooby and the gang have been fighting for their lives, for every sunrise, for every moment. But they’ve had enough-it’s time to stop reacting and start solving the mystery of who turned all of humanity into mindless hordes of bloodthirsty creatures. A single clue leads the gang and their Mystery Machine to Seattle, on the trail of one of the four scientists who infected the world with nanites. Where to start? Velma has a plan, and watch out, because whenever Velma has a plan, things get very dangerous very fast.

The gang has taken refuge in a MallMart, yup, you read it right! I've found it odd that we have yet to see any other survivors in this series yet. I'm still struggling to understand the greater concept at large here and what Velma unintentionally did with this "virus". I get what she wanted to do, and I realize the evil that used it in the wrong way, somehow, but how was it initiated exactly? I'm getting more and more curious about this comic series and trying to understand the origins of it all.

Scooby and the gang are under siege! While the minutes tick by as they await the next wave of monsters, Velma does some soul-searching…which leads to some stunning revelations! You’ll never look at her the same again!

Well, in this issue we finally get a little bit of background information. Not a whole lot mind you, but a little more insight to Velma's background and what led her to her current situation of sorts. We learn more about who she is, who the mysterious Four are that she mentioned earlier. It was definitely what I had been hoping for, but alas I still have questions about this whole virus thing. But in due time, I think, we will learn more!

And we get to see more of that special little somebody again that we saw a few issues back! It totally had me thinking of the first movie again with the live cast! LOL!

Clean up on aisle “doo”! The gang is going to need all the help they can get when it comes to escaping from the shopping wasteland known as Mall Mart. Does Freddy have what it takes to lead the team to safety? Or will he need an assist from the resident team scaredy cat, Shaggy?

The gang is still trapped in the MallMart and trying to get out. But they're kind of surrounded by evil demons and monsters. What I love about this series so far is how very "origin" like is for the Scooby gang. We're seeing them meet. We're seeing them interact for the first time. There's a lot of animosity between Daphne and Velma. Daphne struggles to trust Velma since she was a part of this organization that created the virus that created the monsters. Though Velma still stands by what she says in trying to do what's right.

The ending was rather shocking too! There was quite a few shocking cliffhangers in it too! Luckily I was in binge reading mode!

Escaping Mall-Mart took a toll on Scooby and friends-particularly on Fred, whose broken leg needs more attention than the Mystery Machine’s rinky-dink first aid kit can provide. The gang needs to find a hospital stat-but Velma would rather let Fred’s leg crumble to dust than fight more bloodthirsty creatures. But wait-are those paramedics? Nurses? Are they at least friendly? No? Really?

The gang has escaped the MallMart but not unscathed. Fred has been hurt and they need to get him to a doctor. But where to find one in an apocalypse? Luckily, they manage to find a hospital nearby, but unluckily, it would seem, the hospital isn't exactly empty. Yup, more monsters. A scary doctor one to boot!

One issue I had with this one was the mysterious reappearance of Scooby. It just so happened that he found them through his special tech goggles--which is also how he can communicate with them--after he played distraction with the monsters so the gang could get into their Mystery Machine and get away. Hospitals always creep me out when it comes to the scary stuff! Spent too much time in them as a kid.

Now that Velma has a fully charged laptop, she can’t keep her secrets from the rest of the gang any longer. And when they learn how Velma was behind the infection that turned the world into a horror-infected wasteland, she’ll be lucky if her new friends don’t kill her before the monsters do!

Velma tries to come to terms with the things that are happening and her role in them. She's dealing with a lot of guilt and these new friends she have seem to understand at times. Daphne warms up to her every now and then, but then the cold shoulder makes a quick comeback. We don't get to know everything she's thinking but we get the idea she has a plan of her own. Things end kind of abruptly in this side of things but what's more surprising is the next part!

Our unexpected visitor returns and as we kind of saw the last time, he's even more powerful than before. But inside it seems is still that little puppy we all knew and love from long ago. He seems vicious about 99.9% of the time, but there maybe some good to him as well. I admit to getting a little teary in the latter portion of this one. Let's just say that it involved animals...and it's the apocalypse if you recall, so yeah...sh*t happens.

Rating 5/5 stars

So far this comic series is really shaping up to be a good one! It's very intense in some areas. I do want to recommend that while it does feature Scooby Doo, this comic is not meant for young children. There are some scary moments in it, like legit scary looking monsters! LOL! And cursing! I wasn't expecting the cursing! The last series I read...again, Scooby Doo, but the friendly kid safe one, didn't have any of that! It's not f-bombs or anything but yeah, I was surprised by it. So this is definitely a comic series for the adult Scooby Doo fan!

We get a bit of that romantic tension between Fred and Daphne too! It's quite comical in some ways because Daphne has no interest in romantic interludes with Fred. I can't help but wonder if that might change in the future! I cannot wait to see where this series will go and what kind of resolution will come about...hopefully one will come about for that matter!
