Review--Champion by Marie Lu

He is a Legend.

She is a Prodigy.

Who will be Champion?

June and Day have sacrificed so much for the people of the Republic—and each other—and now their country is on the brink of a new existence. June is back in the good graces of the Republic, working within the government’s elite circles as Princeps-Elect, while Day has been assigned a high-level military position.

But neither could have predicted the circumstances that will reunite them: just when a peace treaty is imminent, a plague outbreak causes panic in the Colonies, and war threatens the Republic’s border cities. This new strain of plague is deadlier than ever, and June is the only one who knows the key to her country’s defense. But saving the lives of thousands will mean asking the one she loves to give up everything.

With heart-pounding action and suspense, Marie Lu’s bestselling trilogy draws to a stunning conclusion.

And so Marie Lu's Legend trilogy ends with Champion! The characters have come so far from Legend and now everything is about to come to an end with this one! I was quite surprised to see that the story starts 8 months after the events of Prodigy, so much time has passed and I can't help but wonder what happened in those months to June and Day.

Anyway, we dive right into the story seeing Day and Eden back in LA after all the quarantines had been lifted, trying to get back to a normal life while June remained in Denver working closely with Anden and training to be a Princep-Elect--basically Anden's elite and personal bodyguard, but there's two others also vying for the position. We learn right away that Day is sick and dying--leftovers from Prodigy--and he and his brother are called back to Denver because the Colonies have offered a stalemate to Anden and the Republic, provide a cure for the plague disease or war is imminent. And in order to do that the doctors want to take a look at Eden who survived the virus.

And so begins the planning and strategy. There's more political upheaval in this one. True, we had that in the first two with the fights going on and assassination attempts. But I feel like it was more noticeable in this one. Which then presents a lot of tension for the reader.

For the most part, loose-ends were tied up. Like we get to see Thomas and Jameson get their sentencing and then there's other problems that spring up from that one. We get lots of action scenes and a happier ending then one expected after all the buildup. It was quite enjoyable. I really liked the way Marie ended this one, because for awhile there, I was experiencing some unexpected heartache.

Although there was one thing I kept hoping to see answers to or some further explanation and that was Day and his getting a perfect score on the Trials. June discovered this in Legend and it seems like that was it. I binge-read these the past few days and I cannot recall why the Trial people hid this and lied. Why they then experimented on Day and left him for dead. WHY?! Why the lies and coverup?!

Other than that nagging little detail, pretty much everything else that I can recall gets answered or resolved in this one, as is fitting for the final book.

The romance factor got a little more intense between Day and June and it was nicely done. I liked how the romance was there, but never front and center of the story. There's war going on people, no time for lovin! But yet, the moments Day and June can steal for such, were endearing!

There was a good deal of action and suspense as well! As I said, there's a lot of battles going on, so there's still plenty of shocks and chills to come from that! It was a very exciting read and the final chapters do leave one a little emotional. Or at least I was!

Very eager to see what Marie's newest series will be about and plan to start that one next! Yay!

  1. Great review! You're right, Champion did tie up a lot of loose ends. I was really annoyed with June and Day's melodramatic need to make decisions to protect the other, but other than that I enjoyed it.
