Review--Ignite Me by Tahereh Mafi

One day I might break
One day I might

Nothing will ever be the same.

The fate of Omega Point is unknown. Everyone Juliette has ever cared about could be dead. The war could be over before it ever really began.

Juliette is the only one standing in The Reestablishment's way. She knows that if she's going to survive, The Reestablishment cannot.

But to take down The Reestablishment and the man who very nearly killed her, Juliette will need the help of one person she never thought she could trust: Warner. And as they work together to bring down their enemy, Juliette will discover that everything she thought she knew--about Warner, her abilities, and even Adam--was wrong.

WARNING: Some minor (for Ignite Me) spoilers from Unravel Me in the second to last paragraph. (It's like the third to last sentence)

Where to begin, where to begin...Ignite Me is the conclusion to Tahereh Mafi's bestselling Shatter Me series. And I have to admit, it was pretty good. But this last one, while enjoyable, still left me wondering a few things. And if you know me, I hate to wonder about anything when a series comes to an end. I like knowing that the characters will move on, have more adventures, live happily ever after, all that jazz, once the book is over. But what I don't like is wondering about the characters in the now. I feel like a few of them still had some unresolved issues and there's just nothing left now.

But let's get onto the good stuff first! The book pretty much picks up where we left off in Unravel Me. Juliette is healing from being shot and then healed by the twins. Warner is taking care of her. He treats her kindly and everything. Basically challenging everything she thought she knew about this guy. She learns pretty quickly, Warner is not who he appears to be. There's more to him then what he shows the world. He's a very caring and considerate person, when he chooses to act as such. This we all saw in Unravel Me as well.

Juliette's sole focus soon becomes in taking Anderson down. Permanently. Killing him. She believes the world could be a better place if it just had the chance. The Reestablishment will cease to exist, if she succeeds. But she's going to need help. In come her awesome friends, but of course Adam is there too. Adam, who thought her dead. This is where we get a lot of serious relationship issues going on. I found myself already drifting from Adam during Unravel Me and even more so in Fracture Me. He's definitely changed a lot since Shatter Me. And this in turn, dramatically changed the relationship between Juliette and Adam. But Juliette's changed too. She's no longer the scared and timid girl Adam fell in love with. She's stronger and coming into her powers. She's different.

Basically all those changes leads to some big relationship drama between the two. I mean big. It was almost sickening in some sense. On several points. That once again we have teenagers so wrapped up in their feelings and then overreacting. There's an argument of epic proportions once Adam and Juliette are reunited and I guess Adam's beliefs and behavior was just nagging at me wayyy too much. I couldn't stand him anymore. Kenji though, was the lifesaver. He continues to be a great friend to each of them. He moreso sides with Juliette, but Adam is still his friend and he does what he can to help him get himself under control, but it's more of a problem Adam has to work out on his own.

And then there's Warner. Warner the guy who completely skeeved me out in the first book, what with his declarations of love and wanting Juliette by his side forever and yadda yadda yadda! He's a character that definitely grows on you as time moves on. Tahereh finally lets us all see the more human side to Warner. It's a realization finally. We saw it progress in the last book, but now it's for real!

So yeah, that's all I'll touch on with romance. I know many have already read this series, including this one, but I don't want to say anything more about the romance and Juliette's choices!

What did kind of bug me was the ending. It was very intense, and the pacing was pretty good and then it's over. I was kind of thrown back. Juliette and her friends have been working all this time to plan their attack and kill Anderson. And then poof, the book is done. It was a bit anticlimactic. I mean Juliette was racing to find the guy and battling it out with his soldiers, but then when it came to the final showdown with Anderson, it went pretty quick. Not only that, but I was left wondering about our other guy. Juliette made her choice, but there was still a lot left unsaid I feel like. I mean where does he stand now? And the whole brothers thing between Warner and Adam really didn't get much exploration either, just a reveal and then stepping aside to see how we feel about that. So yeah, a tad disappointing. There were these emotional upheavals from these rather impacting events I was expecting and not much came from them.

But other than those few hangups, this was a rather enjoyable novel. The trilogy as a whole was fairly good. I liked it. Maybe not loved it, but I definitely enjoyed myself! And I would most likely read more from Tahereh if she has something new for us next year!

Overall Rating 3.75/5 stars--really it was the questions I had after that ending that stopped me from giving a higher rating

Cover Copy Reveal: The Infinite Sea

The hugely anticipated follow-up to the New York Times bestselling The 5th Wave, hailed by Justin Cronin as “wildly entertaining.”

For Cassie Sullivan and the rest of Earth’s remaining human survivors, the situation was already desperate when the 5th Wave hit. It’s about to get worse.

No one yet knows the depths to which Earth’s conquerors—the Others—will sink in order to rid the Earth of the human infestation, nor have they guessed the heights to which the human spirit can reach. Characters introduced in Book One will come to the fore—and others will face the ultimate test.

Readers will watch in awe as the Others give their answer to Cassie’s defiance.

Ooooh I am soooo excited for this one!! Was bummed that the date was pushed back, but still can't wait to read it! This cover is awesome too!!

The Infinite Sea releases September 16, 2014

Iowa Signing with Maria V. Snyder

So as you may know, Maria V. Snyder is one of my all time fave authors! And is the reason why I was absent this weekend! She was in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, a mere 4 and a half hours away from me! And since I began reading Maria in 2006 this was the closest she's ever gotten to me so I had to go!

I came to the simple B&N signing and it was fun. Basically hung out with Maria and the other readers who came to visit! Quite a few of us made the journey to see her as she hasn't really come out this way towards the midwest!

It was a lot of fun! I had dinner with Maria and another reader who made a trip from Montana! There was even another reader, I believe she was from Indiana and she came dressed as Yelena!! It was awesome!

And now for the giveaway! Since I was away all weekend, I am honoring two lucky winners a SIGNED book by Maria V. Snyder!

Turns out Poison Study--her first book--is out of print! Cause I wanted to give that one away! Instead I bring you Storm Glass in its new mass market paperback cover, that's the same cover--just slightly tweaked--as the Australian ones! And the companion book called Inside which holds Maria's only YA novels, Inside Out and Outside In! This was a freaking awesome series! But due to low sales, the pubs didn't want more. Even though the story isn't finished! So naturally I had to buy a copy, every sale counts, and hope that one day the series can be completed! I've seen it happen! Remember the Wicked series by Nancy Holder & Debbie Viguie? SO yeah, it can happen!

And unfortunately, I have to make this giveaway US only. Sorry! There will be two winners for this as well! One book per person.

a Rafflecopter giveaway

Stacking The Shelves is all about the books we are adding to our shelves each week, sharing with you our excitement for our newest titles and maybe have you discover a new book in the process!

I had a pretty decent week! Didn't add too much to the TBR pile and already reading one of them now!

Get right to it, this week I bought:

Ignite Me by Tahereh Mafi
Soul Screamers Volume 4 by Rachel Vincent*

*Bought this one for the final novella of the series which is BRAND NEW! And I thought, note thought, that I initially heard that one of the other novellas in here had a new ending. Can't recall which one or when I heard that, but that's what was in my brain when it came to this volume! But still, totally worth buying for the pretty cover and the new novella!

Then for review from the publishers via Edelweiss, I got:

The Vanishing Season by Jodi Lynn Anderson (ARC)

Mini Review--Unite Me : Fracture Me by Tahereh Mafi

Perfect for fans of Tahereh Mafi’s New York Times bestselling Shatter Me trilogy, this book collects her two companion novellas, Fracture Me and Destroy Me, in print for the first time ever. It also features an exclusive look into Juliette’s journal and a preview of Ignite Me, the hotly anticipated final novel of the series.

Destroy Me tells the events between Shatter Me and Unravel Me from Warner’s point of view. Even though Juliette shot him in order to escape, Warner can’t stop thinking about her—and he’ll do anything to get her back. But when the Supreme Commander of The Reestablishment arrives, he has much different plans for Juliette. Plans Warner cannot allow.

Fracture Me is told from Adam’s perspective and bridges the gap between Unravel Me and Ignite Me. As the Omega Point rebels prepare to fight the Sector 45 soldiers, Adam's more focused on the safety of Juliette, Kenji, and his brother. The Reestablishment will do anything to crush the resistance . . . including killing everyone Adam cares about.

The Shatter Me series is perfect for fans who crave action-packed young adult novels with tantalizing romance like Divergent and The Hunger Games. This captivating story, which combines the best of dystopian and paranormal, was praised as “a thrilling, high-stakes saga of self-discovery and forbidden love” by Ransom Riggs, bestselling author of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children.

PART 2

Fracture Me is Tahereh Mafi's second novella and this time we get Adam's point of view during the tail end of Unravel Me and what happened after he and Juliette got separated.

It was strange being in Adam's mind, it definitely gave me a new perspective of Juliette. Where I thought she was doing better and acting a little less spastic, Adam kind of sees her as not. Or possibly chalking up her recent behavior to nerves. He does still love her and care for her though, for at this point he's struggling to do better so that they can be together. In some ways, I find myself wondering if he really does care for her so deeply. He worries over her constantly, almost to the point where you wonder if he sees her as a child needing to be cared for, like James, and that's why he wants to keep her.

After they get separated Kenji is all about going after her, she's one of their own after all, but Adam wants to go back for his brother. It even proves necessary as the enemy is moving in on the location of Omega Point, where James and many other of their friends who were unable to fight wait. Now here, I can understand Adam wanting to go for his brother first, he's family after all. But then once everyone gathers together, he wants everyone to come with him. He wants Kenji to come with him, instead of going after Juliette.

It almost makes me wonder what does he really feel for her? He's so reluctant to go after her, he believes her safe with Warner since Warner has her--even though we know better.

This was yet another fast paced read and a definite insight to the mind of Adam Kent. Definitely changed my perspective of him.

Now as to the bonus content of Unite Me, I was a mite disappointed in it. Juliette's journal turned out to be pretty much all the excerpts we've read before. Which I kind of figured. But I was hoping that they might at least be in chronological order as to when she wrote them. When what is clearly the first entry is somewhere in the middle of all the excerpts. The only reason why I bought this paperback edition was because it was cheaper than buying two ebooks. Amazon had it on sale and I thought why not? Plus I was curious over the bonus content and hoping for something new, possibly. But I don't regret buying it. Still got to read the novellas!

Rating 4/5 stars, as I was kind of upset with Adam by the end and some of his thought patterns towards Juliette.

Overall Rating for Unite Me 4/5 stars

This week's question is: Snap it Time! A picture is worth a thousand words. Anything and anything. Just give us a pic!

MY ANSWER:

Book related: a recently acquired bookshelf! Technically, this is one third of our downstairs entertainment center. I decided to fill it with my completed series, so there's Keri Arthur's Guardian Series, Jenna Black's Morgan Kingsley, Rachel Caine's Weather Wardens, Chris Marie Green's Vampire Babylon, Melissa Marr's Wicked Lovely, Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy, Dark Swan, and Georgina Kincaid, then Devon Monk's Allie Beckstrom, Tracey O'Hara's Dark Brethen series, and Carrie Vaughn's Kitty Norville series books 1-11*.

*There were beginning to be a little too many of them on the shelves in my room, so I moved a chunk downstairs!

And something non book related that was on my computer, a picture of the Trevi Fountain in Rome, Italy. This was from my Spring Break trip 2006, my senior year in high school! Basically the best vacation ever! (I was going to pick one where I am actually in it, but I kind of look like crap since I didn't have a hair dryer or straightener on me, so my hair was its natural curly mess!) But I was there! ;)

Review--Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi

tick
tick
tick
tick
tick
it's almost
time for war.

Juliette has escaped to Omega Point. It is a place for people like her—people with gifts—and it is also the headquarters of the rebel resistance.

She's finally free from The Reestablishment, free from their plan to use her as a weapon, and free to love Adam. But Juliette will never be free from her lethal touch.

Or from Warner, who wants Juliette more than she ever thought possible.

In this exhilarating sequel to Shatter Me, Juliette has to make life-changing decisions between what she wants and what she thinks is right. Decisions that might involve choosing between her heart—and Adam's life.

Making my way through Tahereh Mafi's Shatter Me series and I've just finished Unravel Me! Now I get it. I totally get why everyone seems to be head over heels for Warner. Warner took me completely by surprise in Destroy Me and continued to surprise me in Unravel Me! That moment we saw at the end of the novella? Totally happens in this one, only we see Juliette watching Warner. But onto the review...

Juliette and Adam are settling into Omega Point. But lately, Adam's been acting weird. Almost distant. It takes awhile, but finally we learn that Adam's discovered his own set of abilities and their own uniqueness. Without getting into too many details, it comes down to Juliette once again being a danger to everyone--which really wasn't anything new--but this time, that includes Adam. While she hasn't hurt him yet, there's a greater threat that she might one day. So the two are apart for more of this book then they were in Shatter Me.

But then Warner comes along. Ah yes, Warner. Like I said, I totally get what everyone's been gushing about the past few years now when it came to this series and this guy! The residents of Omega Point have quite a bit of battles in this one, and through one of them, they manage to take Warner hostage, after they were trying to rescue some of their own who Warner's father kidnapped. Warner's father, as I mentioned in my review of Destroy Me is a complete a-hole. You almost wonder how this man was capable of feelings in order to have a son. But anyway, Warner because the newest "resident" at Omega Point.

Unravel Me was definitely an entertaining read, I admit, it started off a little slow. There was so much buildup and dancing around the secret Adam was harboring and when it finally gets revealed, it just felt a bit anticlimactic. It still made for good story fodder, but I don't know. I guess I was expecting something...more. But that is exactly what we get as the story moves along! I mean, there are some shocking revelations in this one! Ones that I was not expecting at all!

With those revelations come new problems, but not all were totally explored. The biggest issue--besides the whole battle between The Reestablishment and Warner's dad and the Omega Point people--is the ever present love triangle. Adam, naturally won all our hearts in the first one. Warner, back then skeeved me out with his unhealthy obsession with Juliette, but through his novella and even this novel, we get more of his character. More of who he is and who he shows the world and I definitely like what I saw. Warner is the epitome of the mysterious man. He had many secrets and I feel like he might still be holding back from us even now.

So naturally this leaves us with quite a few bursts of romance between Juliette and Guy #1 and Guy #2. And honestly, at this point I have no idea who she will choose. I don't feel like a choice has been made completely on her part. I know who I'd pick, but I won't say. You will find out from whatever emotions I will be expressing after Ignite Me!

This is one series that took me by surprise. I find I don't mind Juliette's somewhat scattered thought patterns. She's not as scattered-brain as before. There's still the repetitiveness of some thoughts and there's the occasional crossing out of thoughts, but they are starting to flow rather flawlessly now. It definitely makes for an easier read, although sometimes I think the amount of repetitiveness for some thoughts, like repeating the same phrase over and over, gets a little over done. I would think three times is enough but there might be four or five or six or something. But in all honesty, that is just a minor nuisance in the grand scheme of things.

Unravel Me was an amazing read and is not one to be missed! It will definitely drag you further into this new world created by Tahereh and might just convince you to stay!

Random Thursday

Today I bring to you Blooper #2 in the Disney Desk Calendar 2014. Observe:

Okay, so the words are a little blurry, but if you read the last line it says: They live by their father's code: "ohana", which means family, and that "no one gets left behind."

When actuality, the movie says "ohana means family, and family means no BODY gets left behind."

I know. I even double checked and watched the movie. The calendar was wrong. Gasp!

Seriously, I need to be the copy editor on this to verify these factoids. Someone's not getting them right! ;)

We'll continue to see how many bloopers there are this year. This is the second and as you can see it was from February!

Mini Review--Unite Me : Destroy Me by Tahereh Mafi

This captivating story, which combines the best of dystopian and paranormal, was praised as “a thrilling, high-stakes saga of self-discovery and forbidden love” by Ransom Riggs, bestselling author of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children.

PART 1 of my review:

So I'm going to read the Shatter Me books in order, novellas included. I only read Destroy Me in this Tahereh Mafi's Unite Me and all I can say is wow! I think I finally get why everyone was so over the moon with Warner! He didn't really impress me too much in Shatter Me, kind of skeeved me out. But getting inside his head in Destroy Me, totally changed my opinion of him.

Warner's father is the new world leader while Warner only reigns over Sector 45 and when his father comes to help him out the "mess" he made, he's anything but happy. And yeah, his father? Not winning any father of the year awards anytime soon. It kind of makes sense for Warner's own character, but Warner still takes you by surprise.

He uncovers Juliette's diary and begins to read it. Not only does he get a better understanding of Juliette, but we also learn more about him. We learn that he's been watching Juliette all along via camera in her prison cell. Still extremely creepy, but yet this is how he falls in love with her. He watches her try to keep her sanity while locked away from everyone and everything.

Warner just completely took me by surprise. For we really do get to see another side to Warner. Perhaps his true self. He's not a monster like we were led to believe and we even learn about the solider he shot point blank in front of Juliette!

Destroy Me is definitely a MUST read if you've read Shatter Me and felt hesitant about moving forward. I plan to read Unravel Me next, then I'll come back to this to read Fracture Me, which as you may already know, is Adam's thoughts after Unravel Me!

Review--Savage by Nancy Holder & Debbie Viguie

Who do you run to?

Out in the forest, tensions are blazing like forest fire. The ancient rivalry between the Fenner and Gaudin packs has reached fever pitch, and only a battle will quell the blood lust.

Katelyn is caught in the middle, her pack loyalties tested like never before. The person she needs the most - strong, sexy, loyal Trick - has no idea about her dark secrets. And while werewolf wars are raging, the Hellhound is still out there, stalking her every move.

It's time to take control. It's time to get savage.

Nancy Holder and Debbie Viguie's Savage is the conclusion to the Wolf Springs Chronicles--and boy was it hard finding copies of these last two. Not sure what happened there! So given that, my memory of the last one was just as fuzzy as it was when I was reading that one and trying to remember the first book, but luckily, the details that were important get brought up and things ran smoothly after that!

We ended last time with a battle between Fenner and Gaudin where the Gaudins cheated and put silver into the water and air, killing most of the Fenners. Katelyn, due to her immunity to silver, survives as do some of her pack members. But she runs into a bit of trouble when she comes face to face with the Hellhound!

In the aftermath, Katelyn meets a member of the Hounds of God, another group of werewolves dedicated to God and fighting the demons of hell. Basically, they are like a werewolf police force and they want to keep the peace between weres, but if the weres are not accommodating, then the Hounds will kill them all. The existence of werewolves is a vital secret and must be kept from humans and with all the fighting the Fenners and Gaudins do, humans are bound to learn things that should be kept secret. Katelyn has a very short time limit to end the feuding between the packs or else all of them will die.

Savage was quite an exciting read! There was lots of action and oh so many secrets finally get revealed. And of course there is still the romance among Katelyn, Trick and Justin. Yup, another love triangle. If memory serves, this one was definitely hard for me to choose my "team"! I think I actually continued to go back and forth. But before I'm even halfway through, I think I was pretty much set on Trick!

The pacing to this one was incredible! I hadn't expected it to be such a fast paced read what with the challenges Katelyn was facing, but it moved along fairly quick and before I knew it, it was all over! I can't get into all the details, but I have to say I loved that every secret, every mystery we've had from the beginning gets revealed! Like who bit Katelyn, the mystery of the Hellhound, who was killing all the people around town and even tying back to the mystery of Katelyn's father's death! It was freaking awesome! I mean the answers were just rolling off the pages and it's always so exciting when that happens. I loved the shock factor, because I was shocked several times over with this one!

Nancy Holder and Debbie Viguie are without a doubt one of my most favorite author duos! In fact, they were my first author duo wayyyyy back when the Wicked series first published back in 2002. Which was another of my treasured Paranormal YA gems that I found before the genre took off! And let me tell you, waiting seven years to the conclusion to that series about killed me too! Glad I didn't have that issue with this series!

If you're looking for a Paranormal YA series with werewolves and a really good mystery element, this is the trilogy for you! All the books were pretty fast paced, from what I can recall and are enjoyable reads through and through! My only complaint is my lack of memory and trying to track these books down in order to read them!
