TBR Challenge Wrap-up--January

Since today's the 31st and I don't see a one day read in my future, I'd figure today is the BEST day to wrap-up my TBR Challenge for January! Did pretty good this month! 8 books knocked out! Only 42 to go! In all likelihood I might be upping my level to the highest one, but not yet. Still too soon to tell!

Here's what I read this month:

Review--Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

In a land without magic, where the king rules with an iron hand, an assassin is summoned to the castle. She comes not to kill the king, but to win her freedom. If she defeats twenty-three killers, thieves, and warriors in a competition, she is released from prison to serve as the king's champion. Her name is Celaena Sardothien.

The Crown Prince will provoke her. The Captain of the Guard will protect her. But something evil dwells in the castle of glass--and it's there to kill. When her competitors start dying one by one, Celaena's fight for freedom becomes a fight for survival, and a desperate quest to root out the evil before it destroys her world.

Sarah J. Maas's Throne of Glass was the hot new read when it released! So many people were talking about it and then my friend got it for me for Christmas, so I decided to finally read it. And while it was a good read, I just didn't find myself entranced with it as many of the other readers were.

Celaena is an assassin, unfortunately she was thrown into prison and then one day the king's son offers her a deal, compete in a competition against other fierce fighters, murderers and criminals in order to become the king's champion and she can have her freedom in four years. Celaena sees this as an opportunity she cannot afford to pass up. She was after all a most feared assassin in the lands before her capture.

Then once the competition gets rolling, some of the contestants are being murdered in the most gruesome of ways. Something is tearing these people apart, not necessarily, someone. Celaena doesn't make it her mission to solve the mystery, but she ends up stumbling upon the answer.

I'm not sure why I didn't truly enjoy this one. It had a lot going for it. Engaging and interesting characters, a well thought-out plot, a good dose of action, a heroine with wit and who doesn't drive me crazy and even some budding romance. What went wrong? I'm still not sure. Perhaps it was a bit of the world-building. It's not that I didn't like it, I guess I had trouble understanding it and that is always a scary factor when it comes to me reading fantasies. Will I be able to understand the world the author created? And for the most part, I did get it, but I felt like I didn't know the whys behind all the reasons that magic was banned. I think this is where I struggled the most and then comes in a history lesson that just kind of randomly pops up.

Soon we're given information about a past queen and then it moves further into dwelling in some sort of magic with Wyrdmarks or something like that and what different kinds of creatures live in the shadows. It just felt sudden and rushed and I had no clue what was going on with this part of the world!

But as I said, it was still a good read. The pacing might have dragged a bit a times, more than I like it to. The actual competition didn't start until nearly 100 pages in. It was just shy of the 100 mark really. Another thing that bugged me was wondering why the king, the one who is having this competition to find himself a Champion--basically one who will do his dirty work, like that of an assassin--isn't there until the near end of the competition! I mean, where are you dude? This is your shindig you're running and you just leave?

The characters were good though. I enjoyed Celaena's wit. She was quite strong for a young girl. She knew how to take care of herself and wasn't at all deterred about being the only female in the competition. The princess Nehemia that she befriends was a nice addition, although it's not until the near end that I finally understood the purpose of her character. And sadly, there was a bit of a love triangle going on. That between our heroine and Dorian--the prince who brought her into the competition and is basically his "champion", for the royals and nobles are all the sponsors and they each sponsor a criminal or whoever to be in the competition--and Chaol, the Captain of the Guards.

Although, one of the two men does try to fight the attraction, while the other one doesn't try nearly as hard. But it's obvious that they both care for Celaena. What will remain to be seen is who she chooses. As there always has to be a choice made.

I can't say that I will be reading further into this series. While this read was a decent enough one, I just wasn't wowed by it. But it is a highly recommend read for all fans of fantasy where you escape to worlds away from our own and magic exists...or is banned, but still exists!

ARC Review--Prince of Shadows by Rachel Caine

A thrilling retelling of the star-crossed tale of Romeo and Juliet, from the New York Times bestselling author of the Morganville Vampires series.

In the Houses of Montague and Capulet, there is only one goal: power. The boys are born to fight and die for honor and—if they survive—marry for influence and money, not love. The girls are assets, to be spent wisely. Their wishes are of no import. Their fates are written on the day they are born.

Benvolio Montague, cousin to Romeo, knows all this. He expects to die for his cousin, for his house, but a spark of rebellion still lives inside him. At night, he is the Prince of Shadows, the greatest thief in Verona—and he risks all as he steals from House Capulet. In doing so, he sets eyes on convent-bound Rosaline, and a terrible curse begins that will claim the lives of many in Verona…

And will rewrite all their fates, forever.

I received this e-ARC from the publishers via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review, I was in no way compensated for this review.

I got to admit, Rachel Caine's Prince of Shadows totally took me by surprise. I was expecting a paranormal version of Romeo and Juliet. The cover has an eerie feeling to it, so I thought...ooh, something spooky! Not so, really.

In some ways, this is the story of Romeo and Juliet through Benvolio's eyes. But it's also much more than that! The story begins before Romeo even sets eyes on Juliet. In fact, he's already "in love" with Rosaline. The Montagues and Capulets are already duking it out daily with fights and the Prince of Verona isn't too happy with the families.

We learn that Benvolio, cousin to Romeo and friend to Mercutio is the Prince of Shadows, sort of a Robin Hood before Robin Hood's time. He steals from the rich and usually gives to the poor. Sometimes he and Mercutio keep some of the booty and sell it elsewhere.

I think Rachel did a fabulous job with this one! Anyone can rewrite/rework a classic, but Rachel takes it to another level and tells the story from another eyes. We still know what to expect to happen and it does, but there's more umph to it! It's been years since I read Romeo and Juliet, but I remember parts of it well enough and of course watching the movies, although it was the 1968 version I kept picturing, one that I watched in high school and in college after reading the book. So yeah, Romeo was Leonard Whiting in my reader's mind and so on and so on! Rosaline and Benvolio were the characters I developed my own image for, since I couldn't really recall who played them since they were secondary characters at that point.

Again, I praise Rachel and her writing abilities on this one! She still weaves in bits of the Shakespearean language throughout the story dialogue, yet also tweaks it a bit so you can understand it better. Even as an English major I had a hard time understanding Shakespeare! Famous lines of course are all there in their famous glory.

The romance between Rosaline and Benvolio was sweet. Where Romeo and Juliet seemed to be all about the passion, there was more of a tenderness and growing to love one another with Benvolio and Rosaline. They only had a few stolen moments throughout the novel, but still, those moments were very precious.

The ending to the story was predictable, in a sense we already know what happens to Romeo and Juliet, but there's still a good 20% of story to go after we find those two in the tombs. What happens with Benvolio and Rosaline is where Rachel's creativity takes over and a shocking surprise is revealed! This tiny twist is what totally made the story for me, where before I was growing a bit bored with it for awhile since there was a lack of paranormalness or weirdness going on.

This definitely gives you a new look on the tragic tale of Romeo and Juliet. It was kind of nice too, to see another story happening amidst this classic tale. Definitely worth a read for all fans of the Romeo and Juliet tragedy and of course Rachel Caine fans!

This week's question is: Time for Book Spine Poetry again! Take a picture of your book spines spelling out something epic.

MY ANSWER:
a TRAPPED
HERO
LIES BENEATH
HIDDEN
in DARKNESS , BEFORE DAWN
HUSH, HUSH
a TEMPEST RISING
all are DOOMED
unless the hero is victorious

With just a few added words (the lowercase ones), this poem is more like a spine poetry story about a trapped hero who needs to battle an evil tempest in order to save the world!! I added in that last line in order for it to make some sort of sense! At least that's how I was fashioning it in my head! How's that for epic?! :D

Review--Up from the Grave by Jeaniene Frost

There’s always one more grave to dig.

Lately, life has been unnaturally calm for vampires Cat Crawfield and her husband Bones. They should have known better than to relax their guard, because a shocking revelation sends them back into action to stop an all-out war…

A rogue CIA agent is involved in horrifying secret activities that threaten to raise tensions between humans and the undead to dangerous heights. Now Cat and Bones are in a race against time to save their friends from a fate worse than death…because the more secrets they unravel, the deadlier the consequences. And if they fail, their lives—and those of everyone they hold dear— will be hovering on the edge of the grave.

Is this really the end?! I feel so sad! For years I've enjoyed Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress series! It totally blew me away when I was still trying to discover new paranormal reads! I was even able to re-read the first book at a time! Up from the Grave is our chance to say goodbye to our beloved Cat and Bones, but I am hoping it's not permanent. I mean there are always short stories and hopefully someday we'll all get that Ian book! Personally I've been dying for an Ian book since she started her Night Huntress World series! Maybe he and Annette could hook up! Haha, not sure if that's possible though!

Anyway, as well all know this is our last hurrah with Cat and Bones and boy do they go out in style! Never has a series kept me so enthralled before! There are always so many twists and turns and surprises along the way, my heart was racing nearly the entire time of reading this book! Jeaniene really knows how to captivate her readers!

Cat and Bones are trying to find their friends, Tate, Juan, Dave and Cooper, who have been missing for some time. Madigan, the man that took over her uncle's job is of no help. Since he's basically our Public Enemy Number 1. In fact, he's even got his own dastardly deeds planned to get to Cat, but Cat needs him in order to find her friends and what we have is a good old fashion standoff. Who will "shoot" first?

Since it's been way too long since I was last in Cat's world, dealing with her problems and not seeing things in Vlad and Kira's going-ons, it took a bit of remembering what's already happened. But luckily, there's nothing critical to remember. The past events are past, and they only get mentioned in passing. Although, the short story Home for the Holidays, does provide the answer to a mere mentioning of a particular character. I won't say it since it's a spoiler for the novella, although I do recommend reading that one because hello, more Cat and Bones before we say goodbye!

There's still some sparks flying between Cant and Bones. That never seems to stop, even with them being married. Truly, this has to be my favorite series where the characters are married and they still have so many adventures. Marriage definitely doesn't dull things in this world! And while there wasn't a chapter to top good ol 32, I was chuckling at the irony that one of the romantic moments happened in Chapter 23, probably just coincidence, but still, I got a chuckle out of it! Mostly because I'm a geek!

I enjoyed seeing all the other characters we've met throughout the series; Denise and Spade, Kira and Mencheres, Vlad and Kira, Ian--sigh--and even Timmie. Annette and Justina also appear at the epilogue, so it was a very nice way of saying goodbye to everyone. Our heroes even visited Denise and Spade in St. Louis, which still amazes me that Jeaniene chose my city. And yet, sob, it doesn't appear in her tour list.

While this is the end of Cat and Bones, I couldn't think of a better ending for them. Mostly because they're not my characters, I don't do fan fiction well myself! But even imagined otherwise, I couldn't think of a better way to say goodbye to these beloved characters. Let's just hope that it's not a final goodbye. There's always short stories and novellas and hopefully that Ian book! Hint-hint, Jeaniene! ;)

Random Thursday

So here's some randomness for you! I have a young niece and then two second cousins that are 2 and not quite 1 yet. So there's a lot of preschool shows going around the family houses. And got me thinking about my days of preschool TV watching.

Well...I might have been a tad over the preschool age, but was still around younger kids so the preschool shows were still on.

Anyway, it was Nick Jr and it was the "host" of it, back when it was just on Nickelodeon in the mornings, his name was Face!

Anyone else remember this slightly goofy guy? Watching my niece and cousins with their generation of childlike things makes me reminiscence on my own childhood days!

Happy Blogoversary to Me! (+Giveaway!)

That's right! 5 years ago today my little blog was born into the blogosphere! It wasn't very big at the time and that first year was pretty dark. Those reviews or posts or whatever we want to call them were scary. I read them over from time to time and think...what was going on in my head at the time?!

My blog started 5 years ago today because Rachel Vincent was having a contest to win some of her books signed or the next book signed...I can't remember which. And you had to post a review of Pride at the time or something to help promote it. I think I posted something on Amazon, possibly Borders too and then I thought a blog would get me another entry, so I stumbled upon Blogger and created my blog! Since Pride was such a GREAT read, I thought why not call my blog that?!

And so my blog was born! And I met lots of great blogging friends along the way. Some who even helped me with the look and layout of my blog. Basically helping me finding websites and whatnot and walking me through some design steps. I've also made blogging friends by following other blogs and reading their reviews and adding to my TBR pile! Heck, it's because of blogging that I even HAVE a TBR pile!

And so, it's with great pleasure that I celebrate this 5 year anniversary with you my blogging friends and followers with a contest! Enjoy!

Cover Copy Reveal--Enslaved by the Others

Vampires, werewolves, magi and worse--the Others have joined the mortal world, and there's no turning back now...

As a New York P.I. and Other specialist, Shiarra Waynest has been in plenty of trouble before. But waking up in a windowless room the prisoner of a vampire slave trader is a shock for anyone. Shia has her wits, her bravado, and a couple of used staples, so maybe she can take on a mansion full of serious evil.

But although she's desperate to escape, Shia needs some answers too. Her friends are in danger. There are betrayers and spies among them. And even if she can figure out what's going on and somehow get a message out, she's still a captive of the worst kind...

Here's the cover for the next H&W Investigations novel! I like it! It's not a final cover yet, so if there's some changes to come, don't be surprised, as Jess said. I like this new look Shiarra has going for her. The first few covers were okay, but it's these latest ones that really wow me! Although, Shiarra doesn't really dress like this, but then again, when does a cover actually depict our heroine in her real clothes? Maybe 50% of the time, but not always!

Insanely Mini Review--Glow by Darynda Jones

Glow is the sultry short story, Shimmer, as told through the eyes of Reyes Farrow.

Okay, so I read Shimmer, now it's time for Glow by Darynda Jones! This is the same Christmas story we had with Charley, except now we're in Reyes' head! And oh my what a treat! I really enjoyed being inside Reyes' head. For the longest time, he was this bad boy alpha male in Charley's life and he still is. But we get to see what he thinks and feels in regards to Charley and oh wow! That was just insane! The good kind, because I LOVED it!

Pretty much everything I said about Shimmer is true to Glow as well! It's a nice moment between Charley and Reyes during the Christmas holiday. Charley is being Charley and Reyes is being Reyes. What more could you want?! Sexy romance? We have that in spades too!

This is yet another enjoyable addition to the world of Charley Davidson and I highly recommend reading it! And again, I stress, if you haven't read the fifth book, there will be a spoiler. Pretty monumental as that was the jawdropper of an ending that we got from the book, so you are warned! But still, read the fifth book and all the books as this series is freaking amazing!!

Oh, duh! I forgot to mention that this is an exclusively FREE read on Darynda's website. Click here to enjoy!

Insanely Mini Review--Shimmer by Darynda Jones

Shimmer is a Charley Davidson Christmas Short Story.

I decided to take a break of sorts and read the insanely short story Shimmer by Darynda Jones! It's a cute little Christmas story with Charley and Reyes enjoying the company of one another. It's simply a moment in their lives.

But don't let that fool you! This is one steamy moment. For if all have read Fifth Grave Past the Light, we know how that one ended. And that particular ending has a role in this short story. So if you haven't read book 5, you will be spoiled by this teeny, tiny, yet major event!

Shimmer is an explosive read despite its length and still has the Charley we all know and love and the Reyes that we all know and desire!

Review--Cursed by Destiny by Cecy Robson

Celia Wird and her three sisters are just like other 20-something girls—with one tiny exception: they're products of a backfired curse that has given each of them unique powers that make them, well, weird…...

Celia’s a girl in trouble.  Her heart is bound to Aric, but he is a pureblood were who must deny her or risk condemning his species to extinction.  And that’s just her love life. She’s also been called to take down a group of demon terrorists looking to overthrow the paranormal world. (No pressure.)

In order to bring them down, Celia must ally herself to Misha, the master vampire who has made no secret of his desire for her. And if that weren’t enough misfortune for one girl, a clairvoyant’s prediction could destroy Celia and Aric’s love for good. The only way to protect the world from unbridled supernatural terrorism is for Celia to bind herself to her destined mate. And that doesn’t appear to be Aric….

Oh. My. God. Yeah, that's pretty much what I said after finishing Cursed by Destiny by the talented and yet just a tiny bit evil towards her readers, Cecy Robson! Why you may ask? Because of the last six words at the ending of this book. Yup, six words. Six simple little words. And they're only the end of the sentence. And the worst part? No word on book 4! Eek!

Okay, let's move onto my review. Because I truly did enjoy this one from beginning to end...minus the last six words which just drove me crazy! Only because of the unknown long length of time until the next book! Note that anything longer than tomorrow, is too long of a wait! All right, back on track here...things are a bit tense in Celia's world. Aric, the love of her life, her mate, is forced to marry another were in order to continue their species. Anara, the wolf in charge, is pretty much your all American (were) asshole. I really, do not like him, he's the driving force that keeps Celia and Aric apart.

But moving on, Celia has her hands full with trying to track down members of the Tribe, the group that's been giving her and the other supernaturals hell. For awhile, it seems unclear what our true course was going to be. Sure, Celia deals with the occasional Tribe threat and takes down what little members she can, but there's a much larger issue on the horizon and the Tribe will continue to be one of the main threats. Further in the story, another Tribe attempt at world domination--or something of the kind ;) --comes up and it will take everything Celia, her sisters and the pack have to defeat it.

The romance in this story becomes a much larger focus. Not the romantic scenes themselves but the arc of romance. Celia longs to be with Aric but fate is being her bitchy self and keeps them apart. In the meantime she has a lustful Misha on her tail and a new lion shifter, Tye stalks onto the scene. Destiny has decreed that Tye and Celia will have babies to help extend their species. Tye is all for the mating...Celia not so much. At first, Tye is bit of a pig. But then we get to see him in a different light towards the end. I'm not saying I am rooting for him. Not at all. But I don't hate him either. So the love situation isn't a square or a triangle really. There are just many obstacles keeping Celia and Aric apart. And of course Misha is set on winning Celia's heart, but I don't really see them together as a couple. Even though we get more Misha time in this one, I am not changing my position on still rooting for Aric to be the winner of Celia's heart.

Celia's sisters still play a pretty large role in story. At first in this series, I thought I would be overwhelmed with Celia and three sisters, but I find myself comfortable with them now. When they're apart is when I get upset, because the dynamics between the four women are just great! Each sister brings something to the group and not just with the powers and abilities, but their personalities. There's sweet, timid Emme, the outgoing Taran and the daring Shayna. Bren and Danny are in the story as well and I enjoyed seeing them again. Reading the novella, A Cursed Moon, lets you in on Danny's background, but it's not imperative or necessary that you read the novella. You'll just be in the know if you do.

Cursed by Destiny was a phenomenal read! This is yet another perfect read for all fans of Urban Fantasy! I loved it from beginning to end...minus the last six words! But truly, it's just the waiting that I hate, for now I am waiting first for information on the next book and then there's the wait for the book itself. But I still highly recommend reading this whenever you get the chance. I don't regret reading it early, it's just as I said, those last six words totally blew me away and strangely it was something I didn't see coming as I tend to read with an open mind and try not to make a thousand predictions while I read. So yes, read this as soon as possible! You will not be disappointed!

This week's topic is: Top Ten Worlds I'd Never Want To Live In

*in no particular order

**NOTE: Now I LOVE these books, but some of the settings wouldn't necessarily be ideal. For the dystopians, obviously I wouldn't want to be stuck in those kinds of hostile locations. I'll explain a bit with each title, why it wouldn't be an ideal place to live!

Angelfall (Penryn and the End of Days, #1)Divergent (Divergent, #1)Doomed
1. Angelfall by Susan Ee--a world ruled by angels who aren't too thrilled with humans? Pass.
2. Divergent by Veronica Roth--where to begin with all the factions and issues (with society) with this one! Pass.
3. Doomed by Tracy Deebs--basically the fact that some nutjob makes technology obsolete completely and shutting down Earth as we known it! Pass.

Black City (Black City, #1)God Save the Queen (The Immortal Empire, #1)Angel Burn (Angel, #1)
4. Black City by Elizabeth Richards--a world ruled by vampires? With troubled human relations? Pass.
5. God Save the Queen by Kate Locke--set in the past, plus there are goblins, vampires and werewolves? And other nasty political issues? Pass.
6. Angel Burn by L.A. Weatherly--another world ruled by angels and angels don't like humans? Yeah, pass.

Alice in Zombieland (The White Rabbit Chronicles, #1)Falling Kingdoms (Falling Kingdoms, #1)Dying Bites (The Bloodhound Files, #1)

7. Alice in Zombieland by Gena Showalter--uh...zombies running rampant at night? No thanks. Unless Cole's there to protect me! And I was like 10 years younger!
8. Falling Kingdoms by Morgan Rhodes--it's in the past-ish, plus there's so much political upheaval going on, especially in Rebel Spring. This is not a place to visit during these trying times! Pass.
9. Dying Bites by DD Barant--moreso the parallel world Jace goes to! Too many paranormals running about. Not safe at all. Pass.

10. Benighted by Kit Whitfield--a read from long ago, but in this one, humans make up 1% of the population, the other 99% is werewolves. Yeah, pass.
