Waiting on Wednesday

I hate waiting...
Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly blog post by Jill over at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights releases we're eagerly awaiting.

Her job description is the “tracking and apprehension of mentally-fractured killers.” What this really means in FBI profiler Jace Valchek’s brave new world—one in which only one percent of the population is human—is that a woman’s work is never done. And real is getting stranger every day…

Jace has been ripped from her reality by David Cassius, the vampire head of the NSA. He knows that she’s the best there in the business, and David needs her help in solving a series of gruesome murders of vampires and werewolves. David’s world—one that also includes lycanthropes and golems—is one with little knowledge of mental illness. An insane serial killer is a threat the NSA has no experience with. But Jace does. Stranded in a reality where Bela Lugosi is a bigger box office draw than Bruce Willis and every full moon is Mardi Gras, Jace must now hunt down a fellow human before he brings the entire planet to the brink of madness. Or she may never see her own world again…

Can't wait for this one! This series is really interesting since Jace is in an alternate reality!! So different from being in reality with supernatural creatures and whatnot!

This week's topic is: Extremely Recommended Books I Haven't Read Yet!

*in no particular order

 THE OTHERS SERIES
Christine Warren

Kinda of looking at my TBR mountain as I do this one! Most of these books are series that I still need to start that have been recommended time over time! And this is definitely one I cannot wait to dive into!

CHARLEY DAVIDSON SERIES
Darynda Jones

Another series I keep hearing good things about! I have this book on my TBR pile as well! This sounded really good too!

PERSONAL DEMONS SERIES
Lisa Desrochers

This is a series I picked up to read when dear Borders was closing its doors! Have the first two books on my TBR mountain and look forward to reading them! Someday!

NIGHT WORLD SERIES
L.J. Smith

Yes, I have yet to read this series! I've read Almost all of her books, except for Secret Circle, but I do all have 3 volumes of this series in my TBR mountain and look froward to Strange Fate whenever that one comes out!

NIKKI STYX SERIES
Terri Garey

Cannot wait to start this series either! Most of these series I've picked are ones that came highly recommended from other bloggers! And I've added to my TBR pile! Sadly I blame Borders for my TBR pile. Since they had to close I went crazy with my book buying! Bought a bunch of books that I had been meaning to start!

Review--Ghoul Interrupted by Victoria Laurie

M.J. HOLLIDAY HAS THE UNUSUAL ABILITY TO TALK TO THE DEAD. BUT WHEN IT COMES TO A DEMON SPIRIT, SHE MAY BE WASTING HER BREATH...

Time to take a demon detour

M.J. and her crew are forced to interrupt the frantic schedule of their realty-television show, Ghoul Getters, and hotfoot it to New Mexico, where a dreadful demon is waging tribal warfare. Sam Whitefeather--M.J.'s spirit guide and lat grandfather to her fellow ghost buster and boyfriend, Heath--urgently needs her help to stop this evil spirit from wiping out the descendants of his tribe.

To defeat the demon, M.J. is told she must kill whoever released it--a thought that horrifies her. But with all the these lives at risk--including her boyfriend's and her own--it may be kill or be killed. Still, it doesn't take a psychic to predict M.J.'s going to have a devil of a time making New Mexico a demon-free zone.

All right, finally read the last book on my release list from last year--although I still have a ton of other books I discovered from 2011 and earlier! Victoria Laurie's Ghoul Interrupted was fabulous! Sadly, this was the first time I was unable to read the book in day since I now work again, part time. So I win and lose I guess.

But it was still a fabulous read! I love Victoria's mysteries! They are so compelling and intriguing that I hardly ever want to put the book down! Generally the ghosts are real--this isn't like Scooby-Doo (and yes, I did have to make a Scooby reference when reviewing a mystery book involving ghosts and bad guys!!)! Of course this time, it's a demon, again! And this demon is out to get the Whitefeathers--Heath's family. Marking him as a possible target. Yet he is compelled to return to his hometown even though he is technically an outcast amongst the tribe.

At first no one wants to think that a demon may be behind the killings, but M.J. is sure of it since Sam told her so in her dreams. She knows he wouldn't lie. But trying to get anyone to listen is harder than M.J. thinks. So she, Heath, and Gilley decide to work on their own. Although things start to get really dangerous, as in another member of Heath's family is killed before the funeral of his first relative even occurs!

M.J. and her friends will have to do some digging into the legend behind the demon to try to find a way to stop it. Of course there's still the threat of the human that released the demon, the human that M.J. will have to kill if she wants to stop the demon once and for all.

Once again we have a suspenseful mystery on our hands! Lots of tense moments in which M.J. is on the edge of danger! Luckily she's got Gilley there to help her out. And he's always there to lighten the mood as well. He's hilarious! Love that guy! His quips and even his over the top fear are just too funny! Although given the situation, I can't say I would be fearless either, I might be running away screaming too!

There wasn't a whole lot of time for romance between M.J. and Heath, there were a few moments, but there was always some kind of interruption, either something dire...or Gilley!

Victoria's writing is really vivid! Every time the demon was coming I would get a little tense myself! There were hints, noting the changes in the scenery and M.J. would get strong feelings overwhelming her. Much like how in Jaws the music always warns the viewer that the shark is coming! Victoria did that in her writing! It was awesome!!

In the end, I kind of figured out the who-done-it. But not the reasons behind it! Which were shocking, although there was a vague hint early on, just not enough to totally come to the right conclusion! I soooo look forward to the next mystery, What a Ghoul Wants! Luckily, her Psychic Eye Mysteries will have a release in between the waiting!

Overall rating 4.5/5 stars

This week's question is: Activity!!! Take a picture or describe where you love to read the most…

MY ANSWER: Not time for picture taking right now. But basically I read in my room on my bed! Which isn't anything super special. I just prop myself up on my pillows and chillax as I read!

TGIF is a weekly feature created and hosted by GReads! that re-caps the week’s posts and has different question each week.

This week's question is: Required Reading: Which book from your school days do you remember reading & enjoying? Is there a book published now that you'd like to see in today's curriculum for kids?

MY ANSWER: Ooh I like this one! It took 12 years before I finally read a book I was forced to that I really enjoyed and that was Alexandre Dumas' The Count of Monte Cristo. It really took me by surprise that I enjoyed this so much since there wasn't anything paranormal in it--by that time I was immersed in paranormal books and that was all I wanted to read!

I want to say that maybe it was the whole revenge theme. The way he did it. I just thought it was very smart and cunning! What's not to like!

I guess in a way I think that Syrie James' Nocturne is a pretty good book. Although I honestly can't see a way to work it into the curriculum. But because it is a vampire book that has a different kind of ending I think it's a good book for vampire obsessed teens to read. Although I feel bad for anyone not in that category having to read it.
I think I didn't enjoy the books I had to read in school because I had to read them. I didn't come across them on my own or anything. It was just forced on me. Which is also why I don't really care for classics and also why I am having a hard time answering the second part of this question!

***Just thought of a good one! The Historian by Elizabeth Kostava! There's history and vampire-ness!!

Random Thursday

Okay so today's another rant! You want to know what really bugs me about The Vampire Diaries--in general, both TV and book series? PLEASE NOTE: What I am about to rant on is regarding info I remember seeing online. I know that some of it may not be true or whatever and am obviously missing out on some facts, but I do believe that some of what I am about to rant on does have some credence.

Okay, as you may--or may not--know L.J. Smith, author of the books, dating back to..1999, according to Goodreads. Uh, I always thought it was 1991. The books were set around then since they graduated in '92. But regardless of the year, L.J. wrote the last book, Vampire Diaries: The Return: Midnight. The newer ones are by a new author using L.J.'s name.

There was a dispute apparently with L.J. and the company--who exactly, the publishers I think, but I could be wrong--because she was writing romantic tension and romance between Elena and Damon. Well, that's not what they wanted. They were more in favor of Elena and Stefan, and possibly letting Damon and Bonnie have something go on.

I thought this to be odd and I was a little peeved that this led to the decision in bringing in a new writer. Yet on the show, Elena and Damon do have some romance or whatever going on. There's been tension and moments, we've all seen it. So why, I ask, WHY is is allowed on TV and not in the books? I mean obviously there are going to be legal issues and all, and that's not what I am ranting about really. I know there are legal issues, this is just me ranting because today's rant day!

But yeah, it just irks me that it's okay for there to be an Elena and Damon on TV but not in the series. It's just crazy!

Stand by as Riley prepares to kick some serious demon butt for the last time in this thrilling, dramatic and sexy conclusion to THE DEMON TRAPPERS series. Riley's always known that Beck had a chequered history, but she's not prepared for what it actually means to be in love with a guy with this many dark secrets. Now that he's finally admitted to himself that he's in love with her too, there's no more hiding the truth about his past. And as it turns out, fending off a demon apocalypse is nothing compared to what's to come...

Okay, so this is the UK cover, no US one yet. I like this one, it fits nicely with the other 3. Wondering what the US one will look like of course.

Foretold will release in August 2012

Of course I'll post more details as I come across them!

Waiting on Wednesday

I hate waiting...
Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly blog post by Jill over at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights releases we're eagerly awaiting.

Jana Oliver's third spellbinding Demon Trappers novel - following The Demon Trapper's Daughter and Soul Thief - brings all new thrills, as Riley Blackthorne takes on demons, love... and the future of the human race.

The days are growing darker for 17-year-old demon trapper Riley Blackthorne. With her father’s reanimated body back safely, Beck barely speaking to her because of a certain hunky Fallen angel, and a freshly-made deal with Lucifer, she has enough on her hands to last a normal teenage lifetime. Though she bargained with Heaven to save his life, her ex-boyfriend Simon has told the Vatican’s Demon Hunters that she’s working with Hell. So now she’s in hiding, at the top of everyone’s most-wanted list.

But it’s becoming clear that this is bigger than Riley, and rapidly getting out of control: something sinister is happening in Atlanta… or someone. The demons are working together for the first time ever and refusing to die, putting civilians in harm’s way. Riley thinks she might know who’s behind it all, but who’s going to believe her? Caught between her bargain with Heaven and her promise to Lucifer, Riley fears the final war is coming – and it may be closer than anyone thinks…

I soooooo can't wait to read this one!! This series is just mindblowing!! One of my only fave dystopian like books! Pretty sure we could call this paranormal dystopian!

True love’s kiss just may prove deadly....

Mirabelle’s past is shrouded in secrecy, from her parents’ tragic deaths to her guardians’ half-truths about why she can’t return to her birthplace, Beau Rivage. Desperate to see the town, Mira runs away a week before her sixteenth birthday—and discovers a world she never could have imagined.

In Beau Rivage, nothing is what it seems—the strangely pale girl with a morbid interest in apples, the obnoxious playboy who’s a beast to everyone he meets, and the chivalrous guy who has a thing for damsels in distress. Here, fairy tales come to life, curses are awakened, and ancient stories are played out again and again.

But fairy tales aren’t pretty things, and they don’t always end in happily ever after. Mira has a role to play, a fairy-tale destiny to embrace or resist. As she struggles to take control of her fate, Mira is drawn into the lives of two brothers with fairy-tale curses of their own ... brothers who share a dark secret. And she’ll find that love, just like fairy tales, can have sharp edges and hidden thorns.

OOOOOOHHHH how I cannot wait to read this one as well!! I loooooooove fairy tales and this is absolutely one of the most perfect fixes for me! I saw it on Netgalley and requested it, but am still agonizingly waiting for it! Along with another read (that's been going on 3-4 weeks now with no response of any kind! :(  )

Review--Wicked Circle by Linda Robertson

IS A LITTLE TIME ALONE WITH THE MAN YOU LOVE TOO MUCH TO ASK?

Well, it may be--when you're Persephone Alcmedi, Lustrata of the witches, and your lover is the Domn Lup of the werewolves. Dor once, however, the disturbance is not Seph's foster daughter, Beverly, her wacky grandmother, or her newly rediscovered mother. This time, it's the ancient and incredibly sexy Menessos, bearing bad news: because the vampire council fears he is plotting a power grab, Menessos is being hunted by a trio of truth-seeking vampire sisters so dangerous they are usually kept locked in stone.

His dreams imperiled, Menessos needs Seph more than ever...and she needs him. Now, Seph has magical promises to fulfill for the weres, multiple mundane family challenges to meet, vampire politics to confront...and into the bargain she's balancing two sexy supernatural males. It's enough to drive any woman insane, especially when you throw in a dragon and--even worse--a government investigator. As danger threatens, Seph isn't sure she can stay alive for the rest of the day...let alone long enough to accomplish all that needs to be done.

Linda Robertson's latest, Wicked Circle, picks up where we left off with Seph and her many troubles! That poor girl has is tough and it only gets tougher. In the beginning she's dealing with a magical ceremony with her grandmother and mother, when things go awry nearly right away. And trouble is soon to follow when she is summoned back home to help Menessos out. Which is where the bulk of the story lies.

Menessos is being hunted by three vampire women who plan to get the truth out of him regarding his plans. But it is likely that he won't survive the matter for the sisters are vicious. Seph has to do what she can to prove Menessos innocence. But at the same time she promised Johnny she wold do the spell that allows the weres to keep their man-minds while in wolf form. She's just a busy girl!

I believe that this is the first time we get multiple points of view throughout the novel and it made for quite a busy read! Going from Persephone, Johnny, Menessos, and other characters kind of discombobulated me a bit! It made it hard to keep track of every little thing going on. And a lot does go on!! Especially with Johnny and his past and his present as the Domn Lup and quite possibly his future with Seph!

That being said, the book isn't without his romantic parts with Johnny and Seph, that happens early on, then other events occur that threaten their stable relationship. And yeah, I can't go on! But the action was seemingly non-stop! It was happening everywhere and there were so many new developments into the storyline that I was left breathless with all the shocks! I sooooo hope the next installment in the series is soon!

Overall rating 4/5 stars
